Shadow smiled and let tears of joy run down her cheeks once she knew Chris would be ok. They wanted to keep him for observation so she stepped outside to call Mae and check on her little man.
Mae: Angie he is fine…everything is fine…but what happened? When are you coming home??
Shadow: I have to explain face-to-face. Don’t let anyone near Devin ok?
Mae: You go into it on that strip didn’t you!! Angela!!
Shadow: Please…I’ve learned my lesson ok…
Mae: Well I should just give that girl back these extra diaper bags she brought over…let me call her…
Shadow: NO!! Umm…just leave those in the spare room for me…
Mae: Angela…What are you up to?
Shadow: Just keep everything safe…I’ll be there as soon as I can…
Mae: You never told me where you were…I’ll just call Chris…
Shadow: Chris is with me…he’s fine…I’ll bring him with me when I come home…everything is fine.
Mae: Angela…
Shadow: Trust me…look I have to go…I love you
Rushing back to Chris she smiled at the sight of him praying. Her presence took him out of his thoughts as he stared into her eyes.
Shadow: You’re gonna be ok Bandit…
Chris: Angie…
Shadow: Shh…they think my name is Maria and you are David…got it!!
Chris: (laughs) Why you lie?
Shadow: Hush David…(whispering) I had to…did you want to be all over the news…better yet, did you want J-Crow to find us!!
Chris: I heard you call me Chris when I blacked out though…
Shadow: The people that know you are here have been paid to shut up…I can’t pay the whole hospital so be quiet…
Chris: I’m just glad you’re ok
Shadow: You saved me…but why??
Chris: You have a life to live…
Shadow: So do you! That was meant for me…
Chris: I couldn’t sit there and watch that happen to you…
Shadow: Well…Thank you…
Chris: Just promise me you are done with the strip…
Shadow: I promise…besides…I won!!
Chris: Oh Yeah…you did win (smiling)
Shadow was happy to share her victory with Chris…somehow she knew he would understand. Winning that race, taking J-Crow’s crown, defending Amir…it was all a part of her destiny. She didn’t expect to feel the way she felt about Chris…but whatever was between them seemed to be growing.
Chris: You don’t have to stay…You should get home…
Shadow: Don’t worry…my little man is in safe hands…and I promised Mae I’d bring you back with me in one piece so I’m not going anywhere…
Chris: Does she know? I don’t want to make her worry.
Shadow: No…she doesn’t… but she’s also not stupid so we better think up something good…
Chris: They are probably going to keep me for hours…where will you sleep?
Shadow: I’m not going to…how will I make sure you are breathing ok if I do? Huh?
Chris: Come here (pulling her into bed with him). How about this? Lay your head on my chest and listen…
Shadow wanted to put up a fight but she couldn’t find the strength to protest. Being held by Chris felt like magic. It had been so long since she last felt so vulnerable. A tear fell from her eye and this time she was filled with sadness. Chris finally got her to a place where she could exhale but she knew she would have to leave him.
Chris: What you thinking about?
Shadow: What Italy looks like this time of year…
Chris: Milan huh?
Shadow: Yeah…I already have everything set…My winnings just made me free for life…
Chris: Good. I need a vacation…
Shadow: Who said you were coming?
Chris: Your heart…
