Part 13

Me and Regina was sittin’ in my dining room, me eatin’ breakfast, waitin’ to hear this big news she had for me.

“So spill it! What’s gotchu all excited that it made you wake a nigga up so early comin’ over.”

“Honestly Trey, I have been wanting to share this with you for some time now, but I just didn’t know how.”

“So tell me,” I say impatient. Instead she sticks her hand out and shows me. “AW SHIT!” I shout trippin’, takin’ her hand. “Go head girl! I see you got dat nigga to finally propose to you… Congratulations!”

“We’ve actually been engaged for some time now. I just couldn’t bring myself to tell you with everything that you were going through with London.”

“Baby you on’t hafta hide ya happiness from me… ever. No matter what I’m goin’ through. Dat’s what’s up doe. I’m really happy for you girl. C’mere!” Regina gets up from the table and I give her a hug and peck on the check. “Ya ring is beautiful too.”

She sits back down staring at it.

“Yeah, he did good. But that’s not the only reason why I’m here.”

“I shoulda known…”

Regina taps my shoulder pushin’ me a lil.

“Don’t act like that. Raymond and I would like for you to be in our wedding as one of his best men.”

“I’d love to.”

“But there’s more.”

“Damn girl! What y’all need blood too?”

“Shut up Trey! The thing is the wedding is in four months.”

“FOUR MONTHS! Why so soon? You pregnant aren’t you?”

“No I’m not pregnant! You know I don’t want no kids.”

“Aye! Dey be the main ones gettin’ pregnant. But why so soon den?”

“Cause Raymond’s band is going on tour and we didn’t want to get married once he got back.”

YOU didn’t wanna get married once he got back, tell the truth.”

“No, it wasn’t just me. He didn’t wanna wait any longer either. So… will you still be in it?”

“Of course. What’s the date?”

“October 17th.”

“Where y’all gettin’ married at?”

“It’ll be at my church back home and the reception is actually going to be on a boat later that evening. So it won’t be right after the ceremony.”

“Dat’s dope!”

“Um, one more thing.”

“How would you feel about me inviting London?”

“How you expect me to feel about it?”

“That’s why I’m asking Trey.”

“Look, it’s ya weddin’ and if you want her to come then invite her. How I feel shouldn’t really matter.”

“You’re my closest friend. How you feel does matter.”

“So if I told you not to invite her what would you do?”

“I don’t know. I mean because of you, London and I have a good relationship, and honestly, I wouldn’t feel right not inviting her.

“Well there you go. Invite her. I don’t have a problem wit it.”

“Are you sure?”

“You’re the best. I do wish things would’ve worked out with the two of you.”

“So do I… just wasn’t meant I guess,” I say sourly lookin’ at my hands clasp on the table.

“Why won’t you just forgive her?”

“We not even gone get into that again.”

“No Trey, we are. I don’t get you. You’ve lied to her before, and she forgave all your bullshit. Yet the minute she steps out of pocket it’s over? How could you be so cold and one-sided to someone that you were willing to marry?”

“Why everybody so quick to overlook the fact that she fucked somebody else? She had feelin’s for this cat even though I did and gave her everything. And I’m sposed to just forgive and forget?”

“Did she tell you she had feelings for him?”

“She ain’t hafta tell me. She fucked ‘em didn’t she?”

“Every man that I’ve slept with I didn’t necessarily have feelings for. I just wanted sex at the time, or was curious about what he was working wit.”

“Well she didn’t need to be curious about nobody. I gave her exactly what she wanted. At least I thought I did.”

“That’s what this really boils down to, isn’t it? You can’t get past the fact that she still wanted to have sex with someone else even while sleeping with you.”

“You damn right!”

“Trey, didn’t you tell me London was a virgin when you met her?”

“So she was curious about another man. So what! Men are curious all the time. She was bound to get it out of her system sooner or later. It didn’t mean she had feelings for the guy. She just wanted to see how another man was. I’m not saying it was right for her to do it while she was in a relationship, but I do think you should forgive her because she knows she’s made a mistake and deserves a second chance.”

“Well I can’t give her one.”

“Why? You expected her to for you. I don’t care if it wasn’t at the same magnitude. That still doesn’t change the fact that you was lying and screwing other women, business or not, and yet she forgave you. Now that she’s messed up you’re too proud and lettin’ that ego of yours make you lose out on the best thing to ever happen to you.”

“You done?”

“You ain’t shit sometimes you know that?”

“I know.” We both laugh. “You askin’ her to be in it too?”

“No. I have all my girls. I just hope she comes.”

“Why you think she wouldn’t?”

“Who knows? Maybe it might be hard for her, especially now, when she knows you were going to propose.”

“I’m sure she’ll be happy to come, regardless.”

Regina looks at me wit smilin’ eyes and a joy that’s so untouchable. It’s somethin’ how life is man. I guess I still will be in a weddin’. Just not my own…

Rob was over Renae’s and Leena’s house talkin’ to Leena in the solarium. Renae had been at work. Leena and Rob hadn’t really spoken since the fight, but today Leena called Rob to come by to explain everything that led up to that nights events.

“I had no idea the girl I saw at your job was London. Rob, how could you?”

“You knew how I felt about her. Just because you know who her boyfriend used to be doesn’t change a thing.”

“It changes everything. Do you know what you did? He was in love with her. You ruined a perfectly good relationship.”

“How perfect was it if I was able to step in? She wasn’t completely in love with him. She wanted to be with me.”

“Where is she then Rob, because I would think if she wanted you, you’d have her right now. So where is she?”

“I don’t know okay,” he says irritated. “She doesn’t want to speak to me right now.”

“Can you blame her?”

“She wanted this just as bad as I did. I’m not only to blame here.”

“You deliberately sought out to get her.”

“But she didn’t make it that hard either… now she doesn’t want to talk tome? I think it’s only because she’s upset that I knew Tremaine was an escort and didn’t tell her. If I can somehow make up for that I think she’d forgive me.”

“Are you out of your mind? You have been so deceitful this whole time I can’t even stand to look at you right now, and I’ve gotten the good end out of the stick. Yet you expect her to forgive you after you manipulated your way into her life all for your personal gain?”

“You don’t know London like I do. She’ll come around. I know what I felt Leena, and I wasn’t alone. She has feelings for me too, she’s just confused about everything that’s all. Once I convince her that what I did wasn’t all that bad, because it was out of pure love she has to come around.”

“Rob I think you need to let this one go. She wasn’t yours to begin with. How come you don’t see that?”

“I can’t let her go because I just can’t stop loving her,” he says passionately. I’ve never wanted a women as bad as I want her. Every time I see her at work I get so excited and not because of how beautiful she is, but just knowing that she’s there. And the way she is with her students… she’s amazing. She makes me want to do so much for her. Give her a life I’m sure she’s never imagined…”

“No Leena… I wake up and she’s on my mind. I fall asleep with her on it. Why? Because she’s so special. She’s the one. She’s my one…”

“You are in this way too deep. You really need to remove yourself completely out of the picture before things turn worse than that fight. Did you hear what Tremaine said to you? He is being fueled by hurt right now and you are his main target to strike. You don’t care about that?”

“All I care about is her… Have you ever dreamed of wanting something for so long, so bad, then once you get it, it still feels like you’re living a dream?”

Leena puts her hand on top of Robs while they were sittin’ on the patio furniture.

“Sweetie I know how strong you’ve said you’re feelings are for London, but Rob I think you are deluding yourself if you think that she feels the same way. She told you she didn’t love you. Honey what more does she have to say to you for you to see that she doesn’t want to be with you?”

“I think about our time spent at the lodge all the time. I still can smell the scent of her skin from the rain. The way it felt as she made love to me. The softness of her lips. Her words when she told me she wanted me. I can’t get her off my mind.”

Leena was very discouraged by Rob’s behavior that it brought her to tears. It was so hard for her to be happy that he was in love when she knew he was the only one in it.

“You have so much to offer any woman that feels the same way about you. Why won’t you move on from this and be with someone who deserves and loves you too? It’s not London.”

He stares at Leena wit a devious grin then wipes the wetness from her eyes.

“It’s no need for you to be upset. I know what I’m up against and I’m man enough to handle it. Besides, it ain’t worth having if you don’t gotta work for it, right?”

Leena smiles.

“I hear what you’re saying and as your friend you know I will always route for you. I just hope you understand that I can’t on this.”

“I already know that. Thanks for your honesty though.”

“I wouldn’t be a good friend if I wasn’t.”

Rob gives Leena a kiss.

“Again I’m sorry for knowingly putting you and Renae in the middle of all this.”

“You may not want to hear this, but Renae and I actually enjoyed having Tremaine work for us. Your cousin… what’s her name?”

“Rachel, was right about the recommendation, I’m just sorry it was at the expense of his relationship.”

He smiles.

“You’re right. I don’t want to hear that. I better go.”

“Where are you going?”

“To try to make things right with London. Where else?”

Rob leaves Renae’s and stops at the Wawa to pick up some coffee. As he was going in he runs into Clarissa.

“Hey Rob,” she says overjoyed. “I’m just bumping into everybody today.”

“Oh yeah… who else came here.”

“I just saw London. She’s about to go away for a few days, and I ran into Ebony earlier at the park when I was running.”

Rob ain’t hear nothin’ else she said, but London goin’ away for a few days.

“Oh you just saw London leave here not too long ago,” he asks being precise.

“Yeah. She’s on her way to the airport. How’s your break going so far?”

Rob tried to down play his concern so he could get some answers out of Clarissa without comin’ across suspicious.

“It’s been good. Haven’t done a whole lot as of yet, but I’m sure I will before it’s all over. You doing anything special during the break?”

“I don’t have anything planned, but I’m open to do whatever,” she says hopin’ to get invited to do somethin’ wit Rob.

“Yeah, I haven’t talked to London since we all got off for the summer. Where she off to?”

“She’s about to go to St. Lucia. I told her she could’ve invited me.”

“I guess her and her boyfriend are going huh?”

“I think so. I didn’t recognize the car she got in. It wasn’t parked close to really get a good look at the driver, but I did see her get in on the passenger side.”

“St. Lucia ‘ey… I’ve been there before. Lovely place. She say what resort they staying at?”

“Yeah. Sandals Grande in a Rondoval Butler Suite. That even sounds like its boss.”

“I hope they enjoy themselves.”

“Well, I’ve never been. If I didn’t feel like I would be a third wheel I’d tag right along with them.”

“I heard that. I guess I better go. Got some packing to do of my own.”

“You’re going away too?”

“No, just going to see some family for a while. Nothing extravagant.”

“Oh. Alright Rob. Have fun with the family and if you want to hook up over the beak or anything call me.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. Have a good one.”

After Rob had gotten his coffee he gets in his car and places the coffee in the cup holder. Then he makes a phone call.

Thanks you for calling Liberty Travel. You’re speaking with Veronica, how can I assist you today in planning your getaway?

“Hello Veronica, how are you doing on this lovely day?”

Thank you for asking sir. I’m doing just great. How can I help you today?

“I was interested in booking a trip to St. Lucia within the next 24 hours. Would you be able to help me with that?”

I most certainly can. And who am I speaking with?

“Robert J. Wheeler.”

On the plane

“London you ready to get this vacation started,” asks Mark.

“Been ready.” Then she peers out her window into the distant sky lookin’ forward to relaxin’ and takin’ in the moment. “St. Lucia here I come,” she says all smiles.

“St. Lucia, here we come.” Mark reiterates after hearin’ her.

They both smile together prepared to enjoy some fun in the sun between two good friends, wit no drama and no distractions…

As soon as London arrives and realizes where they’ll be stayin’ she notices the suites are all shaped like huts. She’s blown away. They were so elegant, compact, but yet spacious. Beautifully decorated on the inside; she sees once she enters her suite. Then she thought it was definitely too much room for one. Once she spots the bed she runs to it and flops on her stomach wit her arms and legs spread-out huggin’ it. Then she turns over pumpin’ her legs in the air like she’s bicyclin’, beamin’ wit excitement.

“HA! HAAAHHH!!! WOOO!!!” she screams. Now she was out of breath from her playful activity. She sits up placin’ her feet on the floor and just looks around. “This place is so FREAKIN’ GORGEOUS!!!” She belts. She sees she has double doors that leads to her own private pool. “Oh my goodness! I don’t know what I want to do first.” Then Mark knocks on her door. She goes to open it, but stands in the doorway surprised to see him so soon. “You’re finished unpacking that quick?”

“No. Can I come in?” She stands there starin’ at ‘em bug-eyed. “What’s wrong?”

“I just wanted a minute to take in everything while I’m getting settled in.”

“Okay… I just wanted to see ya suite. But I’ll give you ya space… for now,” he stresses. Once you’re done ‘taking in’ everything come get me.”

“I will. Don’t go off anywhere without me either.”

He starts walkin’ off still talkin’.

“Well hurry up then.”

“Go put your clothes away!”

“No! I’m used to living out of suit cases. HURRY UP!”

After London finishes puttin’ her things away she starts feelin’ through the pockets in her suit cases makin’ sure she has everything out. The very first one she checks she comes across a fragrant deodorizer tree, the same scent that I had gotten out of the machine for her when we first met. Her mouth drops. She forgot she puts them in her suitcases when they’re not in use to keep them from smellin’ stale then replaces them with new ones after that trip.

Just the thought of that day puts a smile on her face as she grips the deodorizer in her hand. She closes her eyes and lets her mind take her back to better days between us. And the thought of when she first met me was definitely one of ‘em. She brings the no longer scented tree in close to her heart, holdin’ it now between both hands. She was smitten wit the memories, and smiled as she basked in the reminiscin’ of a brighter time.

She exhales and opens her eyes. She was happy to know that’s the one thing that I can’t take away from her. Her memories of us, good or bad. They were hers and couldn’t be touched by no one, and the thought of that she cherishes. She walks to throw the deodorizer in the trash, her mind filled wit a sense that no matter what, everything was goin’ to be alright. Then she heads out to go see Mark. He was in his suite next door havin’ a drink.

“So what are we gonna do first?” London asks.

“Eat!” He says emphatically. “We gone eat and make love on the beach.”

Then he laughs behind it.

“Yeah okay… exactly who are you making love to, cause I’ll let y’all be great while I go get into something else.”

Then she starts laughin’ leavin’ Mark to do nothin’ but smile at her cattiness.

“Let’s go get this food and then just take it from there,” he says tryin’ not to be combative.

“Sounds like a plan. Let’s go!” He takes her hand and together they walk out of the suite and down the path to find some place to eat. London leans her head on Marks shoulder. “This is what I needed. Thank you.”

“You can thank me later,” he says eyein’ her wit a sly grin.

She lets his hand go and pushes him, accidentally knockin’ his snap back off that loosely sat on his head. London takes off runnin’ since Mark threatens to get her…
